Scattered Thunderstorms Produce Multiple Wildfires

Lakeview, Ore. –Scattered thunderstorms moved across the eastern portion of lands protected by the South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership (SCOFMP) Monday night, sparking 10 confirmed ignitions for a total of about 2½ acres from Silver Lake southeast to Sheldon-Hart Mountain Refuge. The largest fire was about 1½ acres and was located on the refuge.

Depending on the amount of moisture associated with the thunderstorms and the vegetation types on the ground, it can take several days for smoke to become visible from a lightning-caused wildfire. Firefighters refer to these fires as “holdovers.” While lightning isn’t predicted, firefighters may be responding to holdovers throughout the week.
