Hollywood’s biggest night, the 94th annual Academy Awards, will once again celebrate the best in filmmaking on March 27, but while the past year’s blockbusters and indie darlings will garner most of the honors there is a category that largely goes unnoticed and unknown by the viewing public – short films.
Seeking to rectify that, Klamath Film will present a special showcase of animated and live-action Oscar-nominated short films on Saturday, March 19 at 6 p.m. at Pelican Cinemas in Klamath Falls. The approximately three-hour program incorporates 10 films in total, five for each category, along with an Oscars trivia competition for audience members.
Designated as films under 40-minutes in length to qualify as a short, three categories are honored by the Academy: animated, live-action, and documentary. Unless shorts are acquired by streaming services, the general viewing public rarely gets to see these films as short films often don’t receive major theater distribution.
Films nominated this year are a global affair encompassing film crews in Poland, Denmark, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, Chile, Spain, Switzerland, Kyrgyzstan, and the United States. These productions run the gamut of emotions, with the film program considered a strong R rating equivalent containing adult themes, violence, nudity, sexual content, and language. The program is not considered suitable for children under 17.
Nominated Live-Action films include “On My Mind” (Denmark), “The Long Goodbye” (United Kingdom/Netherlands), “Please Hold” (USA), “Ala Kachuu – Take and Run” (Kyrgyzstan/Switzerland), and “The Dress” (Poland).
Nominated animated films include “Robin Robin” (United Kingdom), “Boxballet” (Russia), “Affairs of the Art” (United Kingdom/Canada), “Bestia” (Chile), and “The Windshield Wiper” (Spain/USA). Klamath Film, a 501c3 nonprofit based in Klamath Falls, presents multiple special events and educational efforts throughout the calendar year. In addition to the March 19 Oscar Shorts program, Klamath Film is planning a mini-film festival of environmental films for Earth Day in April, a screening of the all-puppet horror-comedy film “Frank & Zed” on May 14, its annual youth summer film camp in July, and the 10th annual Klamath Independent Film Festival Sept. 16-18.
