Open house at historic Modoc Point home

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – An open house at the historic Wilfred Lamm home at Modoc Point will be hosted by the Klamath County Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2.

The home at 24305 Highway 97 North was constructed in 1925 for the family that established Lamm Lumber Co., which operated at Modoc Point from 1916 to 1944.

“Wilfred Lamm’s home had a commanding view not only of his lumber mill, but practically all of Upper Klamath Lake and the Cascade Mountains,” said Todd Kepple, director of museums for Klamath County. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to invite the public to take in the sights this weekend.”

The home is owned by Shannon Hamilton, who invited the museum to conduct an open house. The event is being coordinated by museum aide Kamela Harrington, who has assembled photos, artifacts and blueprints of the lumber mill.

To supply the mill with logs, Lamm established his own railroad logging operation, which delivered logs from a tract of timberland east of the Klamath Marsh.

Lamm also operated a second sawmill for some years on the Little Deschutes River in northern Klamath County, and later in life compiled a brief history of logging operations in the Upper Klamath Basin.

Lamm’s daughter, Winifred, married Gene Favell, a Klamath Falls businessman and founder of the Favell Museum.

Saturday’s open house is free and open to anyone interested. Refreshments will be served.

For more information contact the museum at (541) 882-1000.
