The 2024 Spring Open Burn Window starts Saturday, April 6, and ends on Sunday, April 21, for those within the Air Quality Zone. A map of the Air Quality Zone is available at http://www.klamathcounty.org and at KCFD1.com (scroll down to Fire Stations).
Fire District 1 requirements for public safety are:
- The wind must be 10 mph or less. For wind speed call (541) 883-8127.
- The burn pile should be no larger than 4′ x 4′ and 3’ high. No more than 2 active piles per property.
- There must be at least a 5’ clearance area beyond the burn pile base, cleared to bare mineral soil, concrete, or masonry. The base of the pile must be at least 25’ from combustibles, fences, or buildings.
- Only residential yard waste, such as tree limbs, brush, and leaves may be burned.
- No trash, plastic, rubber, tar, petroleum products, treated or painted wood may be burned.
- All burning must occur during daylight hours and be fully extinguished by dusk.
- All open burning requires a water source to control/extinguish the fire. Hand tools such as shovels, rakes, etc. must be on hand.
- An adult must monitor the open burn at all times.
- The person conducting any burn is responsible for damage and the cost of an out-of-control burn as well as traffic problems and other hazards caused by smoke.
- These regulations apply to all areas within Fire District 1 boundaries, not just the Air Quality Zone.
Additional Public Health requirements for clean air are:
- Call 541-882-2876 to learn if there are any daily restrictions.
- The use of burn barrels is prohibited.
- Burning commercial, construction, demolition or industrial waste is not included in this burn window. Burning for these purposes requires a special permit from the Oregon Dept. of Environmental Quality (541) 633-2021.
- Agricultural burning inside the Air Quality zone is prohibited without a certificate of variance issued by the Klamath County Public Health.

The open burn window may be cancelled at any time due to air quality or fire hazard conditions.
