On Thursday May 31, 2018 at approximately 4:18pm, Klamath County Emergency Communications District 911 dispatched law enforcement to 10550 Wright Avenue on a report of an assault. Steen Hardt reported his brother, Cheney Michael Hardt, assaulted his mother with a hatchet.


The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Klamath Falls Police Department responded. The incident was confined inside the home. The attack by 23 year old Cheney Michael Hardt caused serious injury to his mother. Father, Shawn Hardt intervened and also received serious injury from his son, Cheney Michael Hardt. Steen Hardt armed himself with a knife and intervened. Steen Hardt caused injury to his brother, Cheney Michael Hardt, which caused the altercation to stop. Law enforcement arrived on scene with emergency medical responders. Law enforcement took Cheney Michael Hardt into custody. Medics provided first aid to each of the wounded.

Klamath County Fire District #1, Kingsley Fire Department and Klamath County Fire District #4 responded and transported the three injured to Sky Lakes Medical Center.

Klamath County Major Crime Team was activated with assistance from local law enforcement, Klamath County District Attorney’s Office and Oregon State Police Crime lab.

Cheney Michael Hardt was treated and released from Sky Lakes Medical Center. He was lodged for the attempted murder, assaults and unlawful use of a weapon at the Klamath County Jail.

Shawn and Julie Hardt are being treated for life threatening injuries at Sky Lakes Medical Center.
