On Sunday, February 16, 2025, at approximately 12:58 p.m., Klamath County 9-1-1 received a report of a dog struggling in the water at the Miller Island Wildlife Refuge. The caller, unable to see the dog’s owner nearby, feared that someone may have entered the water in an attempt to rescue the animal.
Law enforcement, fire, and medical personnel responded to the scene. Shortly after, the caller reported finding personal belongings near the water, reinforcing concerns that an individual had gone in after the dog.
Klamath County Marine, Small Boat, and Dive Rescue teams launched an extensive search using divers and sonar, continuing efforts until after 6:00 p.m. Unfortunately, they were unable to locate the missing person that evening.
Tragically, on Monday, February 17, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., the body of a 65-year-old Klamath Falls man was recovered from the water by rescue teams.
Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. This incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of cold water and the risks involved in water rescues.
That was so f****** sad. The poor guy and the dog died. Guy was just trying to rescue the poor dog. That makes me cry. I wasn’t did I call on the scanner.
Heart felt condolences to the friends and family of the victim(s). I feel it very apropos that this unfortunate person was found on 2/17. This was my brothers birthday. Mike would have been 64. He was with dive rescue for 36 years. I am sure he was looking over his team and helping them to find closure for the family. Mike is still my hero.
