May 6, 2025, Klamath Falls, Ore. — If you enjoy biking, kayaking, or running, there are two races available in May that are a great way to challenge yourself or bring friends together and enjoy spring in Klamath Falls. Held Saturday, May 17, the Dirty Pelican race has two options: a 5k fun run or a bike, paddle, run race that can be completed as a team or as a one-person champion.

The Dirty Pelican began as an informal adventure between off-duty firefighters, cops, nurses, 9-1-1 operators, and other agencies challenging one another. Participation grew each year and began to become unmanageable for the group. Luckily, a local nonprofit organization, Pregnancy Hope Center, approached the group with interest in leading the event as a fundraiser for the Center.

Pregnancy Hope Center Executive Director Teri Cline took the idea, began planning, and quickly received support from local businesses, including presenting sponsor Pacific Crest Federal Credit Union. Now in the sixth year of the event, Cline and her team have developed courses in Moore Park and on Upper Klamath Lake that provide participants with great views as they compete in the races.

The bike, paddle, run courses are challenging enough to be fun as a team and approachable enough to do all three events by yourself.

The fun run was added in 2024 as an option for people looking to enjoy the outdoors, but on a paved path that is stroller- and dog-friendly.

“Our overall goal for the event is to provide an exciting challenge for the frequent racer, but a course that wasn’t too daunting for someone wanting to pace themselves or looking for a fun event with friends,” Cline said. “We hope that this event will also draw participants from other areas, such as Medford and Bend, and allow them the opportunity to experience the great outdoors of Klamath Falls.”

The race begins at 9 a.m. on May 17 at Moore Park. The bike, paddle, and run participants take off first, and the fun run begins shortly after.
