Early Morning Highway 97 Head On Pickup Vs Semi Truck Accident and Fire

Highway 97 semi truck vs pickup traffic accident

On October 13th at about 3:40am Chiloquin Fire was dispatched to a report of a head on MVA (motor vehicle accident) between a semi truck and a pickup truck. The accident occurred on Highway 97 near mile post 255 south of Day School Road. Both the semi truck and pickup caught on fire after the collision. One person was reported trapped in the pickup. Good samaritans who happened on the scene, broke a window and pulled one man out of the pickup as it was burning.

According to information Klamath Alerts has received, the driver who was rescued from the small pickup became irrational and combative and fled the scene right after being pulled from the burning pickup. A police officer located and detained the driver a short time later. The driver of the small pickup was then transported to Sky Lakes with unknown injuries.

According to early reports the driver of the semi truck was able to get out.

While responding to this accident, An Oregon State Police Trooper is reported to have struck something similar to a rail road spike in the highway near Merrill. An ambulance was dispatched to check the Trooper for injuries. A different OSP Trooper was then dispatched to the accident.

Both vehicles were burning and the fire also ignited a roughly 100 foot by 100 foot grass fire. Chiloquin Fire was able to put out the fires on both vehicles and they brought the grass fire under control a short time later.

About 80 gallons of diesel fuel is reported to have been spilled onto the Highway around the scene.

Several Klamath Alerts users reported being delayed on Highway 97 at the area of this incident for long periods of time. Crews were still working on cleanup of the accident scene in the afternoon hours today.

More information will be posted once it becomes available. This post is based on unconfirmed initial incident information. The accident is under investigation by Oregon State Police.

  • I’m the semi driver’s wife. He is fine and home in central California. We would like to thank alll the Good Samaritans who helped us. The troopers, sheriffs and city police who helped, the hospital and ambulance staff were wonderful. My hubby lost phone, wallet and was completely out of sorts 700 miles from home. Very scary situation. Thank you all so much.
