Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Thursday afternoon’s crash that involved a Bend Police Department K9 Officer.

Note: We also had a local K-9 unit involved in a crash the same day earlier in the morning here in Klamath Falls.

On May 9, 2019 at about 2:20 PM, Deschutes County 911 put out information on a reported suicidal male subject identified as Zenler CLAIRMONT, age 19, from Lake Oswego, driving a black Jeep Wrangler.

A short time later a Deputy with Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle on Hwy 97  near milepost 131 about 3 miles North of Bend.  When the Deputy attempted to stop CLAIRMONT he fled driving recklessly at high speeds, crossing into oncoming traffic and avoiding multiple attempts by officers to spike strip the vehicle.  CLAIRMONT eventually turned onto NE 2nd Street off Bultler Market, an area with no outlet.  Officer’s from Bend Police Department, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police attempted to contain CLAIRMONT.  In an attempt to escape CLAIRMONT drove through a fence colliding with the driver’s side of Bend Police K9 vehicle.

CLAIRMONT did not sustain any injuries during the crash.  The Bend Police Department K9 officer received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Saint Charles Hospital for treatment.

The name of the Bend Police Department K9 Officer will be released at a later time by their department.

CLAIRMONT was arrested by OSP for Driving under the Influence of Intoxicants, Assault II, Criminal Mischief 1, Reckless Endangering and Reckless Driving.  Other charges may be referred to the District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is completed by all agencies involved.

OSP was assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Police Department and local fire/EMS.
