CHILOQUIN, Ore. – The S’Ocholis Canyon Fire is currently burning in the 9 Mile Area between the communities of Chiloquin and Sprague River on the Chiloquin Ranger District of the Fremont-Winema National Forest and threatening nearby private lands.
The fire is located south of the Sprague River Highway near milepost 12 in the vicinity of Potter’s Park.
The fire was reported early this afternoon and is estimated to be around 50 acres. Firefighters report that forward progress by the fire has been stopped. Mop-up is beginning to reach full containment. The cause is under investigation.
Road closures and evacuations are no longer in place. Evacuations were conducted by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Klamath County Office of Emergency Services, Klamath County Search and Rescue, and local fire departments. No structures were lost in the fire.
There will be increased fire traffic in the area, including on Sprague River Highway. Drivers in the area are asked to use caution and be prepared for delays.
Smoke from the fire is likely to be visible in the area between mileposts 10 and 12 on Sprague River Highway over the next few days.
Conditions are unseasonably warm and dry in Klamath and Lake counties this spring. The public is asked to use caution with anything that can ignite a fire. Please call 911 to report suspected wildfires.
