The Governor’s Commission on the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor held an emergency telephonic meeting to discuss the state’s Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice for fallen Ashland Police Officer Malcus Williams at 12:30 today, Friday, March 9, 2018. The Commission voted to unanimously approve to award the Medal for Officer Williams.
On Friday March 2, 2018 at approximately 7:25 p.m. Officer Malcus Williams suffered a major medical event while on duty and on the scene of a call. Other officers who were on scene rendered aid and summoned expedited medical assistance from Ashland Fire and Rescue. Paramedics arrived on scene and transported Officer Williams to Providence Hospital where the emergency department staff continued to work on him. Officer Williams passed away at approximately 9:00 p.m. Officer Williams is survived by his wife, Ona, and three daughters, Savannah, Georgia and Brooklyn, as well as his sisters Cindy and Amy, who is also a member of the Ashland Police Department. Officer Williams started his career with the Ashland Police Department on December 9, 1996, End of Watch March 2, 2018.
The criteria for this award is as follows:
Oregon Revised Statute 176.267 – Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice.
(1) The Law Enforcement Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice is established. Upon nomination by the Governor’s Commission on the Law Enforcement Medal of Honor established under ORS 176.262, the Governor or the Governor’s designee may award the medal in the name of the state to the family of a law enforcement officer who has died while performing his or her duties as a law enforcement officer or who was killed because of his or her employment as a law enforcement officer.
(2) The medal shall be bronze and consist of a police shield overlaid by a sheriff’s star with the seal of the State of Oregon in the center and the words “Law Enforcement Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice” within the design. The medal shall be suspended from a ring that is attached to a gold ribbon with a blue edge. The reverse side of the medal shall be inscribed with the words “Awarded by a grateful state for the ultimate sacrifice by a law enforcement family.” [2011 c.434]
